I am currently a Telus customer. I want to switch to Koodo. I have my own phone. If I place an order online for Koodo they will send me a sim card. Do I wait until I get that sim card to port my number from Telus? I'm assuming so since I don't want to be without cell service until Sim card arrives. Can I do this all online without visiting a kiosk? I just want to know what the steps are from choosing a plan and ordering a sim card to getting it all activated so there are no surprises...

Once you have a Koodo SIM in hand, You will receive a message from Koodo with your account credentials. At that time, you will be given to option to choose a plan and a number, or port one from another provider. You start the port at that point. Since porting is not instantaneous (it can take minutes to hours to complete for a cell to cell port), you will want to complete it at a time when you expect no calls.

If there is a Koodo shop nearby, it may be simpler & faster to stop by there, as the confirming of credentials if faster at a kiosk.

 There is more info here.

What kind of account credentials?

Why am I asked to choose a plan when ordering the sim card if I have to do it again when I activate it?

Sorry, just trying to understand all the steps before I take the plunge.

You can order a plan and a SIM online together.

However, If you want no surprise, I would suggest you visit a Koodo kiosk or Koodo- affiliated store (walmart, wowmobile...) like David mentioned.

When you order online, the account come pre-activated for when you are expected to get your delivery.

For monthly plans Koodo does not allow for online activation. The sim is activated prior to shipment.  You can do the same thing at the kiosk.  I recommend choosing your plan at the time of activation.  Then you can port your number over on Self Serve online
I also suggest that you visit a store. I have been waiting for my Koodo order for 13 days now.

Porting a number from TELUS to Koodo will be fully completed within seconds.
