How do non-automatic top-ups work?

Basically I'm confused. I registered my credit card, but I didn't sign up for automatic top-ups (I know I get the 10% discount, I don't care. I just want to be able to top up at any time or have the option to use a voucher rather than have it come off automatically).

Does this mean at any time during my "billing cycle" (ie. while my base plan is active) if I add the funds to cover the NEXT month the funds will automatically be applied to my base plan on the date it is due to expire?

In other words: My base plan expires August 5th. If I add $20 (to cover my $15 base plan) to my account on July 25th, will it just sit there and then automatically be applied to the cost of my base plan or do I have to login on August 5th and click a "pay base-plan" button somewhere?

Sorry if that's confusing, let me know if you need clarification :). I just want to make sure that I don't accidently become disconnected because I forgot to login on the day my base plan renews even though the money is there.

Hi there...

You are correct... If you add money to your account it will be there until the renew date arrives... So no worries, putting money in your account, does not mean that the base plan will be renewed automatically that day...

Well, just so you know the automatic payments is just the base plan itself, you would still have to go in and add boosters when you need them so you don't really have to worry about A or B

Right. I think you misunderstood. What I mean is if I set it up for say $25/month automatic top-up, thinking that would be my average monthly bill (so no months where I'd have to go and add like an extra $50 for boosters, just have it already be on my balance), I could end up with a huge positive balance if I over estimated, or not have enough to cover my boosters and have to add additional $$$ at the time of purchase if I under estimated :).

On prepaid there is no such thing as an "average monthly bill". You have a minimum charge to keep your plan alive (like your monthly car payment... skip 3 in a row and you are toast) and then apart from that you have to pay for your own gas and toll booths when you travel. Gas = minutes, toll-both = data. Keep the car in the garage and you don't spend anything on either. Use it a lot and you have to fill the tank on occasion, whenever you want. It's your responsibility.

I set my auto top-up to my base plan + tax, rounded up to the next level, and make it a point to track my usage. Once in a while I will top up minutes or data as needed, but no point in giving Koodo any more money in advance than when it is needed. Set a reminder in your calendar app to check your usage 5 days ahead of base plan renewal and you will do just fine.

I don't think I'm really expressing my thoughts clearly here lol.

When I say "average monthly bill" what I mean is the cost of my base plan + the % of booster usage I go through in a month. For example. I have the $15 base plan, and I add the $25 voice booster and $30 data booster.

If in a given month I only use 100 of my 500 voice minutes, and 200MB of my 1GB of data, then my average monthly cost would be $15 + ($25/5) + ($30/5) for a monthly "bill" (ie. "real monthly usage cost") of $26.

Once I know that number (which should be fairly consistent and obvious after 5-6 months) I can set up automatic top ups for the closest amount (so in my example $30/month) and *know* that the funds will be available on my account when I need them so I can keep my services running with a quick call to *611 vs. having to make a payment first.

I think that makes sense now...hopefully :).
