Hi Melissa, Are you trying to save your texts or someone else's? If they're yours then that's fine but if they're someone else's it's not a good idea and I can't condone it. If they're your texts the easiest way is to screen shot them. There's also apps that can save them for you as well just check your app store or google play store on your device.

It depends on the phone. You can do a simple google search on how to do this on your phone or let us know what model you have and we can help you out.
Generally speaking you press a combination of 2 buttons on your device. Power and home, power and volume down, etc.

I realize OP asked about taking a screenshot of a text log, but I would also like to recommend (for Android) SMS Backup +.

It'll automatically backup your texts to your Gmail account.
