Why are the device prices suddenly higher now with the new tab system? The price of the S4 went up $100. The Q10 went up $150! The S3 went up $225!! What????
Not to mention the new plan prices are also terrible.

This is why.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/story...

The government thought that by eliminating 3 year contract companie would continue to sell phones at the same price on 2 year contracts. I guess they were wrong. :-) Bell has just raised prices too. Rogers, Telus are likely next.

Exactly my point. People have long forgotten how much these mini computers cost as they were always paying very little out of pocket because of subsidies. Government makes a stupid decsion, not because they give sheit about us but because they want the votes at the next election. Companies align with the legislation but have really no choice, if terms are reduced, prices have to go up. And us, BYOD folks, pay the price along the way because 99% of canadians don't want to pay the full price for phones. Yeah, it sucks to be us now.

Sure the prices changed at Bell and Rogers to come in line with a 2 year contact but KOODO DOESN"T HAVE CONTRACTS, YOU PAY WHAT YOU HAVE LEFT ON YOUR TAB. unless you went with a 3 year deal for an Iphone. so to say that it raised the cost of the phone because of the government reduced the Cell providers to 2 year contacts is in my opinion bull. For the first time I am not impressed with koodo and see this has price and customer gauging

IF they raised the price of CONTRACTED phone, that would make sense, a 2yr contract phone should cost more than a 3yr contract phone. But Koodo raised the OFF CONTRACT price as well, so even if you don't want to use the tab you would have to now pay hundreds more, that makes no sense.

Remember 3-5 years ago when Koodo was awesome? Cheaper devices then the competition, per second billing, really competitive plans that offered great value...

I miss those days.

You buy a laptop, don't you? You buy a TV. You buy a car. None of those are subsidized and often much more expensive than a mobile device yet everyone has one.

They were never subsidized so people didn't get hooked on the cheap "drug". We vehemently agree Jordan.

If you noticed they didn't touch the price on the Nexus 4, because it wouldn't make sense as people would just buy from the play store

@Chris:

If there are no subsiidies people will upset the phones cost too much. :-)

I agree with you, however, subsidies really should not be the carrier's concern. I agree with the other people, let us handle the device-buying part. I don't want my carrier to be a one-stop shop, because it never leads to lower prices. I'll bring my own device, let me rent some network range to log onto for cheap and I'll be fine.

The cable company did not subsidy my TV purchase, nor did Shell or Irving subsidy my car when I bought it.

The more I think about it, the more a service-only carrier would be the way to go right now!

They could have easily pushed it up by $50 and it would still be cheaper than the play store. There must be something else going on here. Maybe it"s not a hot seller.

I have referred dozens of people to Koodo who are now customers. Sorry to say, but I am going to have to find a new carrier to refer people to.

I am extremely unimpressed with this move.

True, but is Verizon even a good choice? They are 10 times bigger than any telco in Canada (they have over 100 million wireless customers). How much do they care about the average Joe?

With those numbers in mind, that's the kind of company I'd like to see giving the big three a run for their money.

Ouch.

Edit: this was in response to removing the unlimited incoming minutes but it applies to the new plans in general. I'm not sure why it ended up here.

In light of all this madness, I think Koodo needs to bring a new line of plans catering to those who BYOD. Of course, said plans will need to be significantly more attractive than the ones offered right now because they'd come with no Tab attached. That, or an entirely new flanker brand or MVNO to fill the void, because right now, I see nothing that someone in their right mind would sign up for.

What sucks is (was) that Koodo is that MVNO filling the void. It seems as though Telus is now trying to close that void and suck everyone back over to the dark side. They aren't really any better than their parent company now.

Considering that Koodo was offering the S4 $25 cheaper than everyone else and now it's $25 higher than others, it's not the direction I'd like to see Koodo go. It may be time to move to another carrier. I agree with Adel, I want the old Koodo back.

I was really close to getting a galaxy S4 for $625, with my $50 tab credit and $150 negative tab limit I only had to pay $425 out the door. I waited because I heard of the new tab system, 15% monthly bill towards paying the $150 tab off sounds better than 10%. Now the same money only buys me a galaxy S THREE! are you f'ing serious? I waited longer after the phone's realeased and now I have to pay MORE?? One thing's for sure now, I will NOT be buying my next phone from Koodo.

I think Koodo is going to see more and more situations like these in the upcoming weeks. If the response is bad enough (it seems to be), they won't have a choice but to take action and rethink their strategy. The way things are looking right now, I'd say things need to happen sooner rather than later.

"Let's raise the prices of both the plan AND the devices, that way people will want to switch to us!!!"
Koodo is basically saying that their customers have the memory of a gold fish and math ability of a 5 year old.

OK, honestly, the customers before able to get deals with their previous plans, how is Koodo going to expand new customers?! maybe they think they already got enough from all the ads they are posting everywhere. Honestly, i had a $60, 6GB data plan and Koodo Said i can't keep it anymore because i wanted to pause my account as i will be in another country for couple months. They say i will never able to get that plan back and only customers who signed up before can have that option and the computers don't let them choose it. I would not want to pay the whole month of $60 when i am not even using it and I cannot get back to my plan i had before! This is really INSANE and UNFAIR. Other companies are allowed to pause their plans and come back with the same, it just doesn't count towards the months of the contract, while i did not have any tab or contract on Koodo and they tell me i will NEVER able get back my 6GB for $60 plan. Honestly, my friend who works at Koodo gets $15 unlimited everything. At least that is what i heard from him.

Thanks for the response from everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one upset about this.
I have moved it to an idea, so lets try to carry on the conversation over there: http://community.koodomobile.com/kood...
