High Data Usage with email

Hey! Hoping someone can help clear up a question I have re: data usage. My wife has a 1g data plan, which for her should be more than enough as she doesn't surf much on her phone. Recently in her data usage there have been higher than normal amounts on certain days. Like on some days up to 200mb. She also seems to get almost daily bursts of 20mb at a time, up to half a dozen times a day. What is weird is these bursts often occur between 00:00-07:00, when she's not even using her phone. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? We have a $10 overage fee this month as a result. I have the same plan as her and am only at half of my usage. The difference is she does have it setup to get certain notifications from job sites and that type of thing, but is that enough to account for that amount of data? Like I said she doesn't surf that much with her phone, if anything she uses it more for e-mail, although she told me she rarely sends anything with large attachments, so we're a bit puzzled?

What phones do you two have?

It could very easily be data leakage from other apps running in the background.

Is the phone connected to wifi during 00:00-07:00?

I've got a Nexus 4 and she has a Samsung Galaxy III

I'm not sure about it being connected to wifi during those hours, but it probably is.

Also proactively shut off the data as she isn't using it. Reason being if any apps need updating it adds up. Also make sure that all apps are only updated over wifi.
