Is this a permanent move or just a short trip?

If you want to see that it's unlocked or not, plug in a friend's SIM (different from Telus or Koodo) in your phone and see if it works. If it does, then it's unlocked.

After, if you don't want to get charged in South America, remove your SIM card and leave it in Canada!

If its just a short trip you can always add a roaming plan this would allow you to use your phone while you're in South America. Koodo offers them on their website under add ons if you log in to self service you can see what's available to you

That would be a waste considering she just wants to be able to take photos and post them to fb and instagram etc.

The easiest thing to do would be to just remove your sim card and then connect to any wifi network you can while over there. Or you can just disable roaming in yor settings under mobile networks
