Grandfathered plans now not giving 10% toward tab

Hi. My husband and I got new phones on Dec 30 but kept our old plans because we get 10% towards the tab each month. I had the $35 400 min Canada Wide w/unlimited incoming calls plan and choose not to switch to the $35 unlimited call and text plan because I wanted to keep getting the 10% towards the new $240 ($10/mth) small tab. I told the lady at the kiosk that we would keep the old plans so as not to lose that. My husband has the $30 100 min plan and we would have switched both to the $35 unlimited Canada Wide calls and text if we had known that we weren't going to continue to get the 10% off.

I just checked my first bill and we are not getting the 10% off. Is this a glitch as I thought that we got to keep the grandfathered plan which includes the 10% off? I knew we would pay the extra $10 each for the small tab, but thought it would get paid off sooner with the 10% being subtracted each month. Obviously if we had been told we would not get the 10%, I would have switched to unlimited for the same price instead of keeping a limited plan and for $5 more we would have put my husband on that plan as well.

Hey Lisa! The 10% discount has to do with the Tab type.  Customers can keep the 10% discount as long as they don't upgrade or switch to the new Tab. You can definitely switch your plan over to the new $35 plan through self-serve as of today.  Hope this clarifies things!

I used the $60 that I had collected over 20 months to pay for the phone. But that phone isn't on a plan or anything.

So the phone was $60 and you paid for it with your remaining tab balance and didn't have to put any of the balance on a new tab?

There was no remaining balance. The phone really was cheap. It was pre-used plus it was an older HTC model (my mom just wanted the camera really so she wouldn't have to bug me every time). Since then, I have only been paying my bill as I had for the months preceding that transaction. However, unlike previous months, $3 are not being credited to my tab. I know it's only $3 but slowly but surely, it adds up. So I thought I'd inquire about it.

Hi Farrah - I think I follow, so I'll do my best to explain:

On the old tab system, once your original tab is paid off, Koodo continued to contribute towards a 'positive tab balance' up to a maximum of $150, which you can then use towards the purchase of a new phone. In your case, it sounds like you had accumulated $60 under that structure, and when you purchased the phone for your mom, that full amount was used towards the purchase. Once that transaction was made, the Koodo contribution portion would stop because a) there's no new tab since the phone was purchased outright, and b) your account is automatically updated to the new structure for any future Tabs you may wish to take (this doesn't mean your plan is changed - as you mentioned, you still have the same plan you had previously). The contribution would have only continued until you decided to use the accumulated amount, i.e. whether at $60, or had you waited until the max. $150 was reached, it would have stopped once the positive tab was used.

I had no idea that it would stop. Or else I would've just continued until I got to the max. But thanks a lot for clarifying this! I get it now. Since this was the only thing keeping me at Koodo, I guess it's time to start the hunt! lol

I don't see the $35 plan anymore or I would happily do that now. The only reason I didn't get it was because I wasn't told that my 10% would be cancelled. I had researched to make sure I could keep my old plan and didn't realize that meant that part would change.

OH, wait. I looked under my actual account after signing in and I see that it is an option for me. THANK YOU!! Glad I looked. I was worried it was too late for us.

Done on both our accounts and it's all good now! Thanks for your help clarifying this for me! I appreciate it.

Not true....My plan has topped out at $120.00 a couple months ago if I go into a Koodo location....only way I get the $150.00 it says is if I order online...I have always gone through a Koodo location so it discriminates against those of us who would rather deal with a live person when dealing with getting a new phone?

It is a perk to encourage folks to use the online store. You get the joy of walking out with a shiny new phone rather than waiting for it to come in the mail.
