Gps failing on new phones

How to solve? In the last week my new Galaxy A5 drops its GPS, positioning me in the Atlantic ocean. Turning location off and on will restore it for several minutes to an hour. The entire staff at the Koodo mobile store is having the same problem with their S8 phones. In Saskatchewan with fully updated apps. Factory reset no effect.

Hello Vin,

I have the S8 and hava absolutely no problem with the GPS. Try setting up the accuracy at its highest.

My phone forces high accuracy to use Google maps. It is at maximum and is always at maximum.

Inside a building is not the best place to acquire a gps fix. A clear view of the sky is recommended to lock on to satellites. Experiment with the 'device only' setting as this uses the gps radio without network assistance. If the A5 is able to acquire a good satellite fix, then it's possible there may be an issue with a-gps (high accuracy) where the device uses Wi-Fi and mobile networks to estimate your location.

Especially if using a VPN or DNS service, which frequently reports your location as somewhere else.

I have tried these tools. They do not solve the problem and have no effect on the underlying issue.

Sorry to hear. Sounds like a possible dud. Have you tried putting the A5 in safe mode to see if a third-party app is causing the issue? Google Maps is pre-installed, so you should be able to test gps operation while the phone is in safe mode.

What app are you using? Google maps can sometimes take a 30-60 seconds to acquire your location based on varying factors such as weather or if you're inside a building, and even cellular reception if you havnt downloaded any maps for offline use.

Google maps. Time is not a factor, it appears to be in underlying problem with Samsung code. Waze won't grab GPS at all.

if there were a lot of people at the same location had the issues, it could be due to GPS blocking by surrounding structures. I would try the GPS signal outdoor. If it persists, you need a replacement from Samsung.

The problem is independent of location: indoor/outdoor or where I am in the city.

Then you should contact Samsung to ask for a replacement. Hopefully that one is under warranty.

My S8+ is having GPS issues.  Even outside in very open area.  Sometimes it works great, sometimes nothing.  The other night, two hours to lock a signal.  I have a replacement coming to try, hopefully it will work better.

An update on my 8+ GPS issues that will hopefully help others.  After speaking with Koodo, they sent a replacement phone. First of all, part of the problem was the case I was using.  It was a really nice aluminum and glass case, but it was greatly interfering with the GPS reception.  With the two phones side by side, one in the case in question, the other in just a clear case, the clear case would pick up on at least 80% of the satellites in view and the one the aluminum/glass case would be lucky to pick up 20%.  I would swap the cases on the phones and the issue would swap.  OK, as much as I like it, I tossed the case.  So great, I thought the problem was solved, but then several hours later, no reception on my old phone and the new one was working fine.  A few hours later, the problem reversed, reception on the old one, nothing on the new one definitely indicating a possible design defect of the phone itself.  One last thing to try.  I put on an app called GPS Keeper.  It prevents the GPS from going to sleep.  Now I have a solid lock all of the time with reception again on at least 80% of the satellites.  I had tried this app previously when I was using the aluminum/glass case, but there were still daily issues.  I'll be returning the replacement phone as it was now only available in black and I would really rather keep the Orchid Grey.

So short story,  this is definitely a software issue on the S8 series and hopefully a patch will be released or the next Android release will take care of this.

Latest OS update came through on my phone last week.  No more GPS issues, no more apps showing me in the Atlantic Ocean off of the coast of Africa.  Definitely a software issue as it has now been resolved.
