Google Play sometimes updates apps even when I have the setting telling it not to. Does not happen all the time, but it does happen, using up my bandwidth when it happens. Is there a secret setting somewhere?

you can change the settings to disable the auto updates and restrict the updates to work on wifi only:

1. go to the google play store> menu> settings> uncheck "auto update"

2. in the same settings list you can check off "update over wifi only"

if this doesn't work for you let me know what phone you have and os version

I have it set to: Auto-update apps over WiFi only.
I have the HTC-V, with Android 4.0.3 & HTC Sense 4.0

The setting seems to work most of the time like I said, sometimes apps just get downloaded sometimes.

maybe it's app specific. try checking the application itself for a setting: settings> apps> all> pick the app out of the list> double check its options. or even open the app up and check its generic settings. maybe turn off the auto update all together and just manually update your apps over wifi.

Try switching off auto-update altogether.
