If you say OK Google to the phone and do specific searches or do a reminder or an alarm on the phone through the Google search, it will speak back to you. I have a Nexus 4 but the OS I've got on mine will allow the OK Google feature to work. If you watch this video it will help you with being able to figure out what to search or what to say. Hope this helps :)

Try this. If for example you were to ask, "What is the capital of Ontario?" (or the capital of wherever you live) wait for the tone, then immediately increase the volume to maximum, (this increases the media volume for Ok Google). Ask the question again and you should hear a female voice responding with the answer. If that doesn't work, there are a few other steps to try.

Keep in mind the "OK Google" command from the Homescreen only works reliably using the stock Google Launcher that ships with the Nexus 5.
If you're using a 3rd-party Launcher such as Apex, or Nova, you'll need to launch the Google Now App (swipe up from the [HOME] button) before the "OK Google" command will work.
Also make sure you have Voice enabled within the Google Now App.
