Going to USA for 2 weeks.  I will have my phone on Flight Mode for the travel portion... but once I hit the ground... If I remove the Flight Mode, I will be charge for roaming, even though I don't make calls or send texts?  What if I just received the texts - roaming charge applies?  What if I am in the hotel on their WiFi or at a coffee shop WiFi... will I be charged for roaming?    I saw that Koodo has EASYROAM but that is $7.00/day X 10 days approx...too much for 10 days.  I pay that for my monthly plan.  Any better solution.  Thanks

Incoming texts are free. Everything else (incoming and outgoing calls and data) will cost you pay per use rates. ($1.50/min, $5/20MB and $5/100 texts)

Using WiFi will be free. Make sure you have your data and/or data roaming turned off though.

You could try purchasing a prepaid US SIM card and unlocking your phone. I use Roam Mobility (https://roammobility.com/plans) $3/day for unlimited texting, $4/day for unlim talk and text, $5/day for 500MB and unlim talk and text.

Okay... now this is another new ballgame.   Does Easy Roam activate itself???  How do I make sure that it doesn't?

hi Lyne,
Easyroam is like an accounting code for roaming. If you have it on your self-serve, when you access the network (send text, call, access mobile data), the system will charge you easyroam rate.

If you prefer pay-per-use rate, make sure easyroam is removed from your selfserve online. Also, make sure you don't access mobile data, or you would be charged pay-per-used data rate (which is expensive)

Lyne no it doesn't activate itself. I only asked that to Dennis because he mentioned to check that it's not enabled if you don't want it and want to use pay per use rates. You said in original post that you didn't want it and wanted to use pay per use rates, so why mention it Imo. Some agree with him mentioning it. As Allan said though they see users asking alot what they have and don't have. Sorry to add confusion to your thread.

Flight mode = no roaming charges possible.

Wi-fi only on = no roaming charges possible.

Remove flight mode but turn off data roaming: incoming texts are free, outgoing texts and incoming and outgoing calls are chargeable as roaming. If you don't answer a call and it goes to voicemail, there is no charge involved.

Activate mobile data: mobile data is then chargeable as roaming.

Prepaid SIMS as Allan suggested are relatively inexpensive, but you won't receive any calls or texts sent to your regular phone number.

It may be cheaper and more convenient to use Koodo's pay-per-use roaming. Text and call charges are not deal-breakers, but mobile data can mount up very quickly if you're not careful.

When in flight mode your phone wont work for calls/texts or data. When not in flight mode make sure to have data roaming off then your phone will work for calls or texts but you wont get any data roaming charges.
