Galaxy S9 $150 pre-order bill credit

Koodo is offering a $150 bill credit for Galaxy S9 preorders (before March 16) done on a Tab (not outright).  Looks like this is a variant of Samsung's $100/$150 "bonus credit when doing a trade-in" offer that Samsung is running for purchases through April 9.

Interestingly, Koodo (and parent Telus) have apparently managed to tap into this discount for the pre-order period without requiring a trade-in - from this comprehensive list no-one else seems to have anything similar.   That page also indicates that for online sales Koodo won't have any discount after March 15, but this PDF version on Samsung's site seems to indicate they'll be participating in the $100 online trade-in version like all other online channels. Telus supposedly will even be providing the full $150 online via a $50 instant credit as well as the $100 that will eventually come in your trade-in cheque.

Out of curiosity, does Samsung generally run discount programs when they launch new flagships?  Obviously there's never any flex in Apple pricing, but presumably Samsung sees value in buying some early demand?  I suppose the trade-in aspect might limit things, but as far as I can see any $5 klunker will do, and it would seem they'll get a fair bit of take-up, and from people who would likely have bought anyway?

Samsung usually has something with their new phones. With the Note 8 there was a bunch.
- Free 128GB Micro SD Card & Convertible Wireless Charger with pre-order
- $250 (Or something close to that) Visa gift card if you were a previous Note owner
- Typical trade in discounts
