Hi Susan,

If you want you can just connect to wi-fi networks while in France. Either remove the sim card or set your phone to airplane mode and turn wi-fi on. If you want to access data anywhere, you can take a look at the international roaming add-ons which offers a little bit of data but not much.

I highly recommend unlcoking your phone via ebay and getting a prepaid local sim for data

I don't need to make phone calls, just need my internet to communicate with my kids while i am gone (facebook) for example ?! can I just connect to wi-fi while I am there? I would like to avoid paying an arm and a leg because I am not doing it properly

Yes you can just use wi-fi. However, because the only available data add-on is part of the 40 dollar one, giving you only 50MB, you can expect even Facebook lite to burn through that rapidly. If you plan to use data outside of wi-fi, your best bet is to use a local sim. For France especially, you can use free mobile at mobile.free.fr which will give 50 GB for 20 euros, or even their  "free" service, which gives 50MB for 2 euros and then 5 cents per MB (50 per GB) past that.

You can also get a data-only SIM while in Europe. Telecom in EU is a lot more regulated than here and you won't be paying an arm and a leg:
