I like to use a free app from the playstore called powergrasp which allows you to see your internal and external storage just like a computer and delete and or move files anywhere you wish.

There is usually a built in file manager app on the phone just access this in your app drawer and you'll have options to delete files or transfer them elsewhere.

Ok so what have you put on your sd card? What size is it? It's up to you as apps and OS are kept on the phone. Pictures, videos, etc feel fre to back up and delete as you need for more room.

Probably best to start by moving photos and videos to Google Photos. Photo and video files tend to take up the most amount of space. If Google Photos is not already installed on your phone, here's a download link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.photos&hl=en

Excerpt from Google Photos:

"Back up unlimited photos and videos for free in High Quality. Access them from any device and photos.google.com - your photos are safe, secure, and private to you. Never worry about running out of space on your phone again. Photos that are safely backed up can be removed from your device's storage in just a tap".
