I plan on traveling to the USA later this month. I will be purchasing a talk and text add on to keep in touch with my kids who I have a family plan with. I was wondering if they also need to purchase the add on to avoid extra charges or is calling and texting between us still free when I am in the States and they are still in Canada

Texting will be free. If your kids are calling you, I'd recommend an add-on depending on how many mins they plan on using.

If you are calling them, they will not be charged only their minutes will be used.

If your kids get the LD saver add-on $3/month calling USA will be 5 cents/minute.
If they get the US unlimited $10/month only their mins will be used when calling the US.

Hi there,

If you plan on being in the U.S. for a while and have access to a unlocked phone, I'd recommend taking a look at Roam Mobility: http://roammobility.com

They have unbeatable rates when it comes to roaming and you will be able to call back to Canada as much as you want.

Also, if you have phones that supports data, take advantage of messaging platforms such as Whatsapp, iMessage, BBM, etc. which will ensure your kids don't get charged extra. Roam Mobility's packages come with data but if you decide to just go with Koodo, be mindful of their roaming data rate.

I'm not a Roam Mobility employee, just a Koodo customer who refuses to pay the high roaming rates :)

Hope this helps

Definitely consider a prepaid sim. T-mobile pay as you go is also a good option I've heard.

Main benefit of Roam Mobility is that they are a Canadian company so you can buy the sim card in Canada at various locations (i.e. Futureshop).
