Essential Phone ghost touch problems

I have been using the Essential Phone purchased from Koodo during the Black Friday Sale and have been experiencing ghost touch issues which has become very annoying to deal with. Ghost touch (or touch glitches) is when your screen responds to presses that you're not actually making. I confirm that I am not using any case or screen protector and have made adjustments via the following; enabling GPU rendering, accessibility options including 'hold and delay', sensitivity and even clearing systems cache. I continue to experience random touch inputs and do not know what to do next...

Have you tried a factory reset?

Yes, u should try a factory reset. This is the first thing I did when I received the phone and haven't had any issues!!

Why should someone need to do a factory reset on a brand new phone that’s never been used.

Brand new phones usually have an update waiting to be downloaded and installed out of the box. Sometimes an update can be not optimized properly when installed and a factory reset will fix these small errors that occurred during an update. This is why I perform a factory reset after any majot update to a devices software and I've never had any issues with an update while others are complaining about an update broke this and made this glitch and the battery die faster ect ect.
You could also try clearing the system cache of the device as this can fix alot of these weird issues as well.

So I have have reset the phone as a last step and after trying giving it another attempt for two full weeks I must say I am very unhappy. The issue still persists with the slightest finger print or smudge on the screen and I continue to experience ghost touch issues. Will have to play the send phone out for repair with the possibility of no issues found during the repair. We'll see how this goes..

Yeah just got one and haven't experienced any ghost touches so whether defective or an issue fixed with a software update I don't see any present. Great little phone, nowhere near my Note 8 but makes an excellent back up device that I won't care if I break my Primary device. It's really only the cameras that hold it back and with sensors so small I don't see it ever becoming abything more than the updates have it at now.

Just got a replacement for my Essential Phone that had a earphone speaker grill issue. Now the new one has the dreaded phantom touch issue. Probably should have just kept the original one with holes in my grill.

Yeah I hear ya I've started having ghost touch issues on mine and it's getting to a point that's pretty ridiculous now. I'm going to do a factory reset tonight and see if that helps. Sucks because I put a skin and Tempered Glass screen protector on mine so if I have to send it for repair I'm sure one or the other or both will have to be replaced. Gonna tweet Essential and see if they're aware of the issue and if they can dl fix it with a software update as well.

Actually I did some various testing, removed screen protector, case, etc. I "think" I have isolated the issue to the multitouch problem which is a known issue with Oreo 8.1. Therefore, I do not think I have ghost touch issues now. Might have to revert back to Nougat 7.1.1 to confirm.

I'm glad I've found this topic as I am experiencing the ghost touch issue. I did try factory reseting the device but the issue still persists with the slightest finger print or smudge on the screen. It happens randomly on both Android 7.1.1 and Android 8.1. I've contacted Essential Phone by email about this issue and they said it might stem from the 3rd party apps.

Hai Tran, you should probably go to Koodo and get it replaced. Your issue sounds hardware related rather than software.

Gordon ; did you have the seal of the earpiece fall off ? It happened to me after 3 days only and I'm debating if it's worth going through the trouble of exchanging since it's mostly cosmetic. And Paul, I'm curious where you got the tempered glass protector? I only could find ones with bad reviews on Amazon. I'm hoping you found a hidem gem somewhere!

I've been fooling around with my Essential and I may have found a temporary fix for this issue until essential can address it, I'll come back after some further testing and let everyone know if it fixes this issue but so far it seems like it might have so fingers crossed as it's thr only issue left with the phone after the 8.1 update.

Ok I've only tested this for a couple hours but had no ghost touch issues while testing so perhaps others here would like to try it out and see if it helps them and report back here with their own experiences.

- go into your settings and turn on Developers Options within the settings and then go to those developers settings. (settings - system - about phone - tap on build 8 times until it tells you developer settings is enabled)

Now press the back button and enter developer settings option that have appeared in the settings menu

* If your not familiar with the developer settings don't touch anything other than turning off the grip rejection*

- Now scroll down to the input section and turn off the grip rejection option

*if this doesn't work try turning down the touch sensitivity perhaps, I haven't attempted this yet because turning off grip rejection has so far solved the issue for me in the couple hours of testing I've done *

Reporting back with your experience trying this fix is greatly appreciated whether it works or not, Thank you.

I tested grip rejection and sensitivity and it didn't work for my broken multitouch issue.

Anyone install the new Oreo 8.1.0 - Build OPM1.180104.141? Did it fix the ghost touches?

Looks like we are waiting until June for the fix on the multitouch issue: https://www.xda-developers.com/android-8-1-oreo-multi-touch-bug-fixed-june-update/.

Not sure if that's the same issue as I'm typing on my Pixel 2 XL and I haven't had the issue at all with this phone but my Essential Phone has become unusable as it happens multiple times a day now and either freaks out taping things all over the place or the screen becomes completely unresponsive to any touch what so ever until I tap the power button off and back on again.
I think I'm going to message Essential about it and see if they will give any light on the issue.
Hope I'm wrong and it is the same issue and it is only affecting certain units but not sure how that could be.

Sorry, yes you are correct, there are 2 separate but possibly compounding issues. First is the "ghost touch issue" which I honestly feel is hardware related. Second is the "Oreo 8.1 multi-touch issue" which is painfully apparent when you pinch to zoom or play games that require more than one finger; two or more touch inputs cause erratic screen behavior. I have also noticed that certain apps like YouTube have weird scrolling issues with one finger as well.
