Enable fm chip in phones

I think it would be a good idea if koodo enabled the fm chip in their phones (if this is possible). There are a number of reasons this is a good idea:

1. You can get emergency information when cell service is down.
2. You are able to listen to free radio without using data or wifi and it saves battery life.
3. Koodo would be the first carrier in Canada to do this (many US carriers did this earlier this year).

The only downfall I can see is that the phone companies no longer make money off radio streaming costs. And extending the battery life, means customers do not have to purchase a new phone as frequently.

keep in mind that not all phone have FM. IPhones for instance, doesn't have a built in FM tuner, if I remember correctly. it's been discussed before, unfortunately, I think the government (CRTC) would have to step in because I don't see any provider  doing it volunteeringly

According to what I have read, the iPhone people have neither confirmed or denied their ability to have an FM chip. However that is only one type of phone, there are many more types of phones out there.

The providers don't always see the reason why we want "ancient" technology on our state-of-the-art phones (they need to see the demand). And wouldn't it be better for the phone companies to change on their own without the government stepping in? There is a chance that Koodo has no power in this relationship because they have a parent company that could still be calling the shots. But there is something that we can do, there are petitions online, like this one: http://freeradioonmyphone.ca/
