Easy Roam: wifi question

How do I use only wifi?

I am planning on adding easy Roam but would like to limit the $10/day as I can check my phone every other day or so.  Does easy roam work if I open an email icon but dont actually read an email or even if my email box just received an email; as with FB if someone sends a message but I don't open to read,  am I charged?

If I have access to Wifi (and not use data) will that supercede the Easy roam and I won't be charged that day if I just use the available (free) wifi?

I used the last travel package offered by Koodo and I had many issues with it, so I am a little hesitant with this new model.

Easy Roam is used anytime to you talk on the phone, send a text, or if cellular data is used.

It is easy to not make/take a call and to not send a text.  However, with cellular data, you will need to turn data off to prevent any apps from using data (this includes background data like checking if you have any new emails).  With data turned off you can just use the free wifi

Receiving an email on your phone uses data, whether you read it or not. If you want to make sure your phone only uses data over wifi, turn off cellular data on your phone. (simply not adding the 'international data roaming' add on will also prevent the phone from using data outside of Canada or the US, but shutting it off at the phone is easier for you to verify).

Additionally, remember that if you make/answer a call or text, you will be charged the flat rate of $7 for a 24 hr period.  This fee covers all calls, texts and data use (subject to the limits on your Koodo plan) within that 24 hours, so you might as well take advantage of that time window to check your email, do a little surfing, etc.

Also, if you need to check your email daily and don't have access to wifi, bunch two daily checks into one 24 hour period. (eg. check 2 PM one day and 1 pm the next).  This will save you $7.

Cheapest way to proceed is to turn Airplane mode on and then re-activate wifi on your handset. That way there's no leakage of chargeable mobile calls, texts or data. When you do cruise thru a public wifi hotspot, you should be notified that a wifi connection is available. Then you can log on and check your emails and surf. Use Skype or another wifi calling app to check your voicemail and return calls.
