Easy roam question

I have a question about easy roam.

Before going on vacation last week, I spoke with a rep at a mall kiosk. I was told that if I activated easy roam on my phone, I could use my phone on land (I was cruising) in the United States and the Bahamas, as if I were at home, for $7/day and $10/day respectively. It was explained to me that this would be a much better option than using PPU, which could add hundreds of dollars to my bill, as opposed to the daily rates above.

I thought I understood this. Now I don't.

I activated it by texting travel to Koodo, and got confirmation by text and email that it was on my account. While on land in Orlando, and in Nassau (2 days) I used my own data to check gmail, and Facebook. I did not use it to watch or upload videos, or anything that uses large amounts of data, just like when I'm at home. I use wifi for those things. I also didn't send or receive texts, or calls.

While on the ship I utilized their onboard internet, which I paid for. I only used my cellular data while off ship. Otherwise that was turned completely off on my phone and I was tapped in only to the ships wifi.

Color me surprised when I see I have PPU roaming charges in excess of $100! There is nothing on my account indicating easy roam was used or charged. Koodo didn't respond to my queries about why this is and why it wasn't clearly explained to me. I know $100 beats $500, but I was led to believe it would be less than $50 for what I'd be using it for....if that.

Could this be a glitch? Does it take time for that to kick in and reflect? Or was I told something completely untrue by a Koodo employee?

Hi Beth,
We don't know about the detail of your conversation with that rep at a kiosk. It is depended on your roaming usage need, that decided if easyroam or PPU was cheaper.

General idea is: if you a limited users, with casual usage of texts, then PPU is cheaper. However, if you use data (which you did) then PPU is more expensive.

How much data, call and text did you use while roaming over there? you could check it and the PPU rate in your bill.

I activated it by texting travel to Koodo,

I'm not sure what you might have texted, but the Koodo Help Page describes a different process:

Have you a copy of the text or email you received? If it clearly indicates you applied Easy Room to your account before departure, Koodo should be able to adjust your billing. Based on your notes above, you accumulated at least $27 to $34 of Easy Roam usage, so it seems worth while to get it clarified. I suggest a private message to their Facebook account or a DM to their Twitter account as being a better choice than a call to *227 (billing).

Have you logged into self serve and downloaded your detailed pdf ebill?  There should be more details about your charges there.

What does the surprise charges say?  What were the date ranges on those?
