I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace that my friend gave me. She had a monthly plan with Koodo. Now I'd like to switch it to prepaid. In the instructions on the site, it says to get a prepaid phone and a prepaid SIM card. To use the phone I already have, will I have to unlock it? Or can I simply get a prepaid SIM card and activate it?

As long as it's Koodo prepaid you don't need to unlock it. Otherwise you do. Keep in mind the prepaid sim cards are $20 and you'll have to activate on the koodomobile home page on the bottom. Click the tab where it says "activate prepaid phone" on the bottom of the home page.

You need a Koodo account that has been active for at least 90 days before Koodo will allow you to unlock a phone. There is a charge of $50. If you do not have an account, you would be better off going to a 3rd party site like gsmliberty.net or cellunlocker.net. I'd avoid the one listed in the post above this one.
