Does my monthly charge pay for the next month of service?

I registered for Koodo near the end of a billing cycle (Nov. 23), so that when I got my first bill (Nov.28) I had a $10 charge for that first week. Understandable. The amount of my monthly plan, divided by the number of days in a billing cycle, multiplied by those first days of usage, comes out with that number. However, I also had a charge of $50 (my monthly plan) for the next month, Nov 29-Dec28, on that first bill. Does this mean that the monthly charge for my plan is actually paying for my next month of service?

By the way, this is pretty much standard for all cellphone companies.
