So my suggestion is for you to disable iMessage if you don't have any data plan by going to genreal>message
If you DO have data indeed, then you shouldn't worry about how much data is iMessage using becasue it's peanuts!

is there an iphone data plan like there is a blackberry plan? that way they could include imessage as an exeption

If you are connected to Internet via wifi and sending to another iMessage user, then you are not using any cellular data, you are using the Internet.

It is really hard to actually tell, but less than browsing. Maybe 1MB would be around 100-200 messages
