Does data get used up if I leave it on, and I get a facebook notification for example?

It depends on how you have notifications turned on in facebook. I have all mine set to sms notification, that way I get text messages instead of push updates from facebook. Best suggestion is if you are worried about data usage is to turn it off (settings, mobile networks, data connection, off) or get a program like APNDroid or 3G Watchdog..

These examples are for android phones, if you have an apple iphone, then toss it in the garbage, i mean, go into settings and turn off data from there.... :-)

Notifications do use data but it is a very small amount, not enough to worry about. You would need to get hundreds of notifications before you would use a significant amount of data. Most data is consumed while surfing the web or streaming video.
