Does checking voice mail use up my minutes and does sending an automated message such as when I'm driving use up minutes?

Calling your voicemail does use your minutes. To avoid this you can call it from your landline if you have one.
By automated message do you mean one of the ones that you get when you decline a call with a message? If so, then no, that doesn't use any minutes as you didnt actually answer the call.

Call your cell number and press * and your VM password.

To save your minutes, you can access your VM during your free evenings and weekends too.
Edit : I noticed that you have a prepaid account. So, there is no unlimited Eves&Weekends with prepaid...
