Do cancellation fees escalate in 15-day "trial" period?

Signed my son up for a Koodoo plan with 2GB on Saturday since he had to change from Public Mobile. Charming patient salesman assured us that 2GB would be more than adequate. Ha di ha. Son had unlimited data on PM and doesn't have wi-fi, so two days later he's already up to 1.8. (Yes, I could tell him not to watch movies on his phone . . .)

I see that we can cancel service within 15 days and get a full refund, but cancellation fees will apply because he's used more than 30 voice minutes/50 text messages/50 MB of data. (It would have been hard not to. I mean, this is a phone, right?) Does anyone know what these fees will be, and whether they'll increase? I called Koodoo and was told to go back to the kiosk for the answer, but I live 65 km away and work. I called the kiosk but have had no reply. I need to know if son and I should abandon all and drive into Montreal right now to avoid a million dollar fee and having to donate a kidney.

It's not a cancellation fee. You just have to pay off the tab on that specific line. So on the next bill, your tab will be billed to you. Your tab only goes down after time passes so your never going to be paying "more"..

If you got a Tab S, your tab is likely $150.

If you got a Tab M, your tab is likely $300.

If you got a Tab L, your tab is likely $500.

So if you decide to cancel, you will be billed approximately the amount of the tab you chose.

I'm sorry. I don't understand what you mean. Could you explain a little more? On the agreement, it says:

"If you are not satisfied with your phone or the service, you can return the phone for a full refund and cancel service within fifteen days of the start of your service period. Cancellation fees do not apply unless you have used more than 30 voice minutes or 50 text messages or 50 megabytes of data. The phone must be returned in near new condition with the original packaging."

I don't think you have to pay off the Tab since you would essentially be returning the phone. You still have a right to do that in 15 days, the difference would be you just pay the pro rated amount of whatever service you used up until that point. 2GB is plenty of data (I have 6GB but I never go above 2) but if you are used to having unlimited, you're gonna have to change your usage and use WiFi more often.

Except he has went over his usage, so a return can't be done. Cancellation is the only option now.

You can still return your phone at no charge due to the CRTC wireless code of conduct.

The "cancellation fee" would be the payment of the plan for the month

1) What I would do is return the phone first (from where you bought it) since you can return it with no issue withint the 15 day period. Note you are not cancelling anything with this step, only returning the phone. Just tell them you are going to use another unlocked phone from home if they give you any hassel

2) Then I would call Koodo to cancel the plan or go to another provider to port your number

The cancellation fee is your tab. Simple as that :) Do you get it now?

If not, do you know what the tab is? You must if you signed your son up for Koodo.. and its also stated in the agreement you signed (how much of a tab you signed up for).

I'm just going to ask all these questions at once instead of waiting for a reply to each individual question, just in case:
None of these questions are relevant unless you answer no to the above...

What plan did you sign your son up on?

What phone did your son choose?

How much did you/he pay for the phone upfront?

Hi Ahmad, Ivan is right! The tab will not be charged and the phone can be returned. The customer pays no cancelation or restocking fee and is simply required to pay only their first bill for their usage if they exceeded the trial usage limits. Thank you!

Okay, if you are within the 15 days, you can return the phone and cancel service with a full refund of the Tab and everything, but you'll have to pay out a month of pro-rated service. That's what the "cancellation fee" is in this particular circumstance.

If you had kept the phone for about a month or more and THEN wanted to cancel, the phone is yours to keep but you'd have to pay off the Tab amount.

You are not responsible for paying off your tab if you return your phone within the 15 day period. You are responsible for your first month's bill for going over the limit.

Your "cancellation fee" is $55+taxes.

Thank you. So just to make sure I completely understand and I know what to expect when I return the phone:

I'll have to pay a full month's bill ($55) for the usage to date, even if it's a tiny proportion of what that monthly bill covers. And people who use, say, 31 minutes of talk, or 51 text messages, or 51 MB pay the same cancellation fee as someone who uses much more. So if my son uses the "unlimited" parts of his plan (talk and text minutes, for example) before he can return the phone within the 15 days, we won't have to pay any more than $55?

Is that correct?

Log onto your self serve. I think some of this may depending on your billing period. Usually the first few days are pro-rated before your full billing period commences. Which means it maybe the full month PLUS the pro-rated partial period
