I unlocked my phone by contacting Koodo via email so I can travel abroad and purchase a sim at my destination. Koodo emailed instructions stating that i must backup my phone and erase it to complete the unlocking. I have an iphone SE. I really do not want to have to erase my phone, i dont have enough space in the “cloud” to back up the entire phone. Has anyone successfully changed sims without erasing their phone?

Hi Sam,
No, you don't necessarily erase the phone. As per Apple instruction: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201328 You would need a SIM (active or inactive) from another provider to trigger the unlock mechanism.

If you don't have a SIM (from another provider) but want to unlock the phone, then you would need to restore your phone, so the phone could unlock itself.

Do you have access to a computer? You can backup and restore through iTunes..
