Do i need to buy a koodo phone to hook up pay as you go?

No you don't need to buy a koodo's phone. All you need is an unlocked phone that will work with koodo's and grab a prepaid SIM card that will fit it. You can go to any koodo's kiosk and grab one. Just make sure you tell them it's for prepaid. Also they are about 20 bucks but when u activate it they will give you a credit of 20 bucks

Just to clarify if your phone is from another carrier it doesnt have to be unlocked already. Koodo will unlock phones for new customers for free

Koodo will only be able to unlock android phones, not iPhones.

Just to clarify, we can only unlock phones from another carrier on a postpaid activation - not prepaid.

You can also get a prepaid SIM at authorized retailers like BestBuy or Walmart if they're more conveniently located for you.

That's correct. For prepaid accounts you can get sim cards at authorized retailers like Ivan above said.

For the longest time, none of the partner retailers were carrying the pre-paid SIMS. Can anyone personally attest to their now being available through alternate retail channels?
