i just got my phone and don't know much about how to use it. i just checked my data usage and found out i used 150 meg within a couple of minutes on saturday. i was online briefly for maybe 5 minutes that day. the time it shows me using the data i was not online.

How can i find out what i used the data on so it wont happen again? The self serve page that shows the data usage just shows time used and amount. It does not tell me how the data was used.

I also see that small amounts of data were used when i know for sure i was not on. I have added no widgets or apps other than what the phone came with... a samsung gs3.

Go to Settings > More... > Data Usage. You'll see a chart showing it, and you can play around with a warning and limit options too. If you scroll to the bottom, you'll see which apps were using data in the background. If you click on them, you can even "disable background data" so they don't hurt you in the future.

Also go to the Play Store, then drag from the left side of the screen to the right. Select Settings. Near the top of the menu you'll see an option for "Auto-update apps". Make sure apps are set to auto-update over WiFi only.
