data usage at the beginning of the cycle is already 20MB

I have an iPhone 5s for over 5 months and on the first day of my cycle I see 20MB usage already. This has been happening for at least the last two cycles since I started paying attention. I've been using "My Data Manager" to keep track of my consumption and the Koodo Selfserve is always 20MB off to my disadvantage. I also reset the data in the Settings of the phone and manage which apps are using data, including keeping tabs on the "System Services". I still cannot explain how I can start the month with 20MB already in, which for a small plan like mine seems like a lot. Just wondering if this is a common practice and larger plan users just don't notice.
Appreciate the help.

The simple fact is 20mb can be used on a phone in a second or less. That's all the time it takes. It would actually be more of a shock if you didn't start your cycle with some kind if usage. Smartphones are always connected and using data. Phone to self-serve usage is never accurate (the same), but self-serve is the right amount.

Only if my phone is using data while on wifi, and exactly 20mb at the beginning of the cycle before I even leave the house. Also, at that rate (20mb/day) my plan would only last a couple of weeks, and so far I haven't been over.

You're right Javier, I'm noticing that also. 20 MB added to my data at the beginning of every month, at least the last two months I've noticed. I also use "My data manager", excellent application, and it doesn't record the 20 MB. I read down through the responses to your comment and I noticed the one from the Telus/Kodoo person saying it was a reservation data amount. But I'm not buying that explanation because it doesn't seem to go away during the month and ends up in my final total for the month. I wonder if Kodoo is scamming us so they can charge us more for our monthly bills? I wish Kodoo would fix this so it doesn't happen.

If it caused overage, then I would take a screen shot of Koodo's usage and that from your data tracker. And call Koodo to correct the issue.

To be honest I have noticed recently that Koodo's usage meter is always higher than my iPhone data usage meter too. But since I'm always under my limit I never paid attention to it. I use an iphone 6.

I wonder if this is also happening to others? Or just iPhone users?

Javier, I wonder if we need to send a complaint to the CRTC?

I say send it.  This way it is front and center.  It also gets the ball rolling right away

Interesting as I have been using a IPhone 6 Plus for the last 6 months and previously an IPhone 5 . Have not changed my phone habit but are using close to an extra 500 meg per month.
Notice since updating the OS to the last my first day of the cycle it is using 120 meg and not using the phone. My data management software shows nil but Koodo shows usage.
Interesting may be we are all being charged for data we are not using!

Is it possible that the small data discrepancies is due to calibration differences, actual cell phone VS Koodo infrastructure?

All is possible, just that exactly 20mb sounds too precise. It also happened to another user, exactly 20mb.

If there's anything to say.

Phone vs Carrier usage has never been accurate on ANY device across ANY network. How about you go to the phone manufacturer and complain. You can't automatically assume it's Koodo's fault because it's shower the higher usage. I know it's easier for you to blame the carrier but that makes no sense lol. It could very much be the phone.

This is happening to me as well. Last month, I didn't think anything of it. I wasn't sure, maybe I had used 20megs very quickly within the first day of the new billing month, but now July and again the same thing. Naturally I came on here to find other people in the same boat.

I know I didn't. First day of my new billing cycle was Wed July 22th. Didn't use data at all that day. It wasn't even turned on. Then on Thurs - still having not used data or turned it on other than to access self serve - and yup you guessed it - 20megs of data exactly used.

So I send an email off to support thru self serve (allowing them to see my account details) only to get a long winded reply back basically telling me I'm wrong. The funny part is they display a breakdown of my data usage. Tell me I used 20k on my first new billing data ... okay so why did it say I had already used 20megs the next day!? They then go on to tell me my total data usage up to this point is 126megs. They break down my usage day by day, line by line and guess what!? Yup it doesn't add up to 126 megs. Your support team obviously didn't pass grade three math.

This is frustrating and I hope its corrected soon because I don't wanna see this every month going forward.

Update: I got Koodo Customer Care to look at my case and they replied that my current data usage is 16.37 MB, which is the same amount reported by the Data Manager and the iPhone's data tracker, +/- 1 MB which is an acceptable margin of error. What is not acceptable is 20 MB off as reported by the Koodo SelfServe tool. The simple fact is that 16+20= 36 as shown in the SelfServe tool screenshot.

I sent all images to Koodo Customer Care and I trust they will look at the error, because big carries also make mistakes. I'll keep everyone posted.

This data issue, is a repetitive Cutomer complaint, continually recycled, without resolve to Customer base.
Plus/minus 1meg, is one thing. Pushing data overage to 20megs that places Customers into the next tier and charging the Customer $5.00 EXTRA for the 20megs is something, entirely different.

Happening to my wife also.. An additional 20-22mb at beginning of last 2 cycles
Koodo serve app on Iphone 5 reporting incorrect, reports incorrect on app on my android also
Login to website and it reports useage wrong also
But, if I click on Data to get more detail about her usage, it reports correct
eg... Data reports she's used 28mb, but if I click on Data icon to get more detail of useage it reports 6.79mb
Hope that makes sense

Would be nice if there was a fix to this

Hi there, let me bring a bit of clarification. There is no magic usage and it's actually called a “reservation” :) What happens is that an amount of data - usually 20MB, but up to 100MB - is automatically reserved for data sessions, to ensure uninterrupted browsing (e.g. less buffering when streaming videos, downloading files or apps, uploading of pictures to social sites like Instagram, viewing maps, etc). The reservation lasts one hour. If the total amount reserved is used, another reservation is made. If it hasn't been used in totality, the remaining amount is "released" until another session is started. On Self Serve, the usage meter will show the data amount that includes the reservation, while the data record (with more details) is showing the accurate amount used, without reservation. I hope it's more clear now :)

Yannick, I find it difficult to accept your explanation because the 20 MB is not going away during the month and is ending up on my final bill. Please fix this problem.

Yannick explanation makes perfect sense.
The 20mg and any part thereof is always in existence and will always be used, even if its used 1byte at a time. Because it's reserve data that's required to keep the device operating fluently.

Steve, I think you missed the point of my comment. The fact that Kodoo deducts the 20 MB from my monthly data allotment, leads me to believe that I have 20 MB less to use than I actually do. The practice is creating confusion as evidenced by the fact that so many people have written in about it. Kodoo needs to find a better way to deal with this issue. I also cannot tell whether I'm being charged for the 20 MB at the end of the month even though I didn't use them.

I interpreted Yannick's post to mean that there is a 20MG reserve at all times, during all days of the billing cycle, including the first day of billing cycle.
I was also curiosly, perplexed, as to why this was an issue, until I read Yannick's post.

What I don't understand is has this practice was introduced recently? Why was this not an issue a few months ago.

Update: New cycle started today and the issue has been fixed. The selfserve tool is displaying my data usage accurately, no additional charges before or after the fix so I'm back to happy.
