Hello, I would like to know if Chinese phone models are compatible with koodo or is it only a per-approved list of phones that work with koodo's network?

As long as your phone has network compatibility with Koodo/Telus network, it will be fine.

Asian phones tend to be problematic, as their cellular networks operate on different frequency bands than North American providers. The phone needs to support both 850 and 1900 MHz for (3G/HSPA/WCDMA), and 1700/2100 to work with (4G/LTE). Currently, koodo only uses LTE for data, so you could still use a phone as long as it supports the 3G frequencies. If it only supports the LTE frequencies though, you're out of luck.
depending on just how recently the phone in question has been released, you can generally check its compatibility at .

If you want to future-proof a little bit, having 700 and 2600 bands covered is not a bad idea as some Canadian towers use those as well.

I've had plenty of Asian phones on this network without issues. It's unknown budget-oriented brands that tend to be the problem. Sticking to better-known brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Oppo is a good idea as long as you check the supported frequencies. I've done just fine without LTE on many of them but wouldn't recommend any 3G bands be missing.

Currently using a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, LTE and all.
