Checking your voicemail should not count towards airtime.

I've never used more than my plan's included minutes, but once voice mail became included in all plans, I started having to check it often for messages - to my surprise, checking your voicemail counted towards your airtime usage and I got charged quite a bit. Checking your voicemail shouldn't count towards your airtime!

To avoid using your airtime, you can check your VM from a landline or friends cell phone :)

Just hit "*" when the greeting message starts to access the menu.

The counter argument to this, is that when you access your voicemail, it counts as an actual call, because you are dialing out from your cell phone. Same applies to 1-800 numbers. To avoid the airtime being used, wait until the evening or use a landline as suggested.
