Charged data for sending MMS on non-smartphone

Years ago, I used to send pictures with my non-smartphone regularly and was never charged data. I also used to send pictures when I had a smartphone and was also never charged data. Now, I'm back to using a non-smartphone and without fail, every month I'm being charged data for sending MMS. MMS is included in my "Talk and Text" plan so I shouldn't be charged for it.

Whenever I call Koodo's customer support, I'm always given a credit because nobody knows what the problem is. Customer service reps usually contact tech support who also don't know what the problem is. The phone is an LG VX8700 (Shine Flip), so it's impossible to have background apps running on my phone since it's not even smartphone.

It's such a hassle to call every month for a credit. At this point that I'm considering leaving Koodo. It takes approximately 30 minutes per month to fix it. The time wasted between the customer service rep, tech support, and myself, probably amounts to more money than my entire phone bill is worth. It is clear that I'm only charged data when pictures are sent.

The customer service reps usually offer to remove data all together to prevent the problem but that's not what I want. I want to be able to send pictures for free, just like how my plan says it should be. Why hasn't this problem been fixed yet?

You're being charged for data. Backround apps that run in the backround cause these charges. Data charges cannot be avoided while using MMS. If you plan on using it I suggest getting a data plan to cover this. Otherwise you'll end up being charged $5 for the pay per use rates for the 1st 25MB. This is the way smartphones are built and has nothing to do with the carrier itself.

Please read before posting... even the title says I'm not using a smartphone.

Smartphone or not while using MMS data charges may be applicable. Regardless if you leave Koodo or not won't rectify your issue even if you go with another carrier. To add, as per the fine print for unlimited messaging it states "additional data charges may apply depending on the picture size".

Rocky, I disagree with that. Clearly MMS is free with Ryan's plan. There should not be any charges. This is why Koodo is crediting his bill every month. Koodo is the one billing incorrectly here. I would be extremely annoyed too to have to call in every month

Also Rocky, this is a roughly 5 year old CDMA flip, there is ilke a 0.1% chance of apps or anything running on this one.

I am experiencing the same problem for the last 2 months in a row. I am using a 4-year old Samsung Intensity and my plan includes unlimited texting, which includes picture texting as well. This month they set up data block and now I can not send text messages longer than 50 characters.

DId you get Koodo tech support to open a ticket to look into it?

It's weird that the data charges happen 6 sec before the MMS. Is this always the case?

It depends, sometimes I'm charged, sometimes not. I just uploaded a new picture . Maybe you can spot a pattern. Thanks

Hi Ryan,

Wow, that is very strange indeed, I never even heard of that! I'm afraid I'm not techie enough to help :(

What are the details of your plan, Ryan? I was just thinking you might be better off with prepaid, where MMS works flawlessly without purchasing any data booster. But obviously if you call a lot, that would be useless to you (calls are 5ct/minute on prepaid with the $25 booster).

There are many of us who are begging Koodo to allow a data block/cap without disabling MMS, you might want to add your voice to that idea. I fully agree with you, it's madness having to pay $1.50 or $5 each month for data you didn't want to use.

Sorry I can't be of further help, let's summon the gurus and see if they know a solution to your particular problem :)
If I'm not mistaken, the LG VX8700 is a CDMA phone, so she would not be able to use it with Prepaid if she wanted to :(. We've run into this issue (data charge for picture message on non-smartphone) at our kiosk, but have not found a solution for it yet either. I agree that it would be nice to have some tiny data cap (even 5-10mb would be nice) to help a little bit with this, unless some other answer is found!

Thanks for answering Sohpia. My plan is: unlimited evenings and weekends, 100 anytime minutes, unlimited texting and photo messaging.

Here's my previous month's bill. It is weird that sometimes I am charged and other times not.
