Can't Receive SMS from Google?

I switched to Koodo prepaid service yesterday and got a new phone number along with it, so I've been updating various accounts to associate myself with this new phone number. Unfortunately every time I try to verify my phone number with my Google account (whether via the Hangouts app on my phone or via the Google account page) it says it's sending an SMS to my new phone number, but I don't get an SMS.
I've deleted my old phone number from my Google account, I've tried turning the phone off and back on, I've tried a non-default SMS app, I've tried with data on and with data off, with wireless on and wireless off and I've checked to make sure that Hangouts is letting me receive messages from people not on my contacts list. I was able to get an SMS from Koodo and from Facebook, but I can't seem to get one from Google.

Can someone please help?

I had this problem too. Eventually I gave up and told Google to phone me instead. Yes, it uses talk minutes, but I hardly talk so it wasn't a big deal.

How did you manage to get Google to phone you?

I presume you've turned on 2-step verification. If so, go into Google account settings and go through the security checkup (skip through to 2-step verification settings) and you should be able to change it there.

Actually, I'm just trying to verify my phone for account recovery purposes, and unlike 2-step verification there doesn't appear to be a voice call option there, only SMS.

OK - I checked my settings and my phone number still shows as "not verified" even though I have successfully used it for 2-step verification. Not sure why.

Well, this has suddenly fixed itself for no reason I can discern. All I can guess is that it eventually found the right place/time of day and decided to start functioning.

It's not unusual for SMS verification from many US services to not work or take a long time with Canadian phone numbers.
