CDMA phones won't work outside of North America.

To be a little more technical many more networks globally chose GSM over CDMA when it came to cellular technology. This list is most likely way out of date (as some networks have been/are being shut down, and Koodo isn't even listed) but this gives you an idea of where they in theory would work and with what carriers.

The next complication is the "technology" as the list calls it. Canada used 800/1900MHZ for their phones, some countires used different frequencies which (depending on the model of the phone) would limit further what phones would work in what other counties.

Now granted GSM (which evolved to HSPA) runs into similar issues, it's much more widespread limiting the impact.
