i purchased a koodoo chip and i had a cell phone from virgin mobile will my chip work in it?

what do you mean by chip ? The SIM card or The SD card ?
it it is the 1 st one the answer is no. If it is the second the answer would be yes

I think he's referring to Koodo chip as (SIM), if it's that, he can use it his Virgin phone (that should be unlocked first)

The phone originally obtained from Virgin would need to be unlocked before it will work with Koodo. There's no guarantee it'll be perfect, either. Check if it's compatible here:

Most of Bell/Virgin unlocked phones are compatible with Koodo/Telus network, except CDMA phones.

You can use the chip(sim card) in another networks phone but that phone would need to be unlocked 1st, which usually cost around 50$ through the carrier or you can get it done online usually for much cheaper.
There are a ton out there but some good ones I've used are cellunlocker.net and Mobileincanada.com
