How complicated is it to switch to a pre-paid plan from a plan? Is there a fee? Will I need a new SIM card?

There is no fee to switch from monthly to prepaid. You will need a new SIM card. If you want to keep your existing number, do not cancel your monthly service - just activate your prepaid SIM and port your number.

Will the SIM card be free? It says its free with HSPA capable phone? What is that? What is "porting" your number mean?

Thank you for the reply!

Hi Emma,

First of all, if you move your plan to prepaid, you can't have one account for yourself and your father - but you could get prepaid for the both of you (without unlimited calling between each other).

The SIM card is not free. If you buy one from Koodo it'll be $20, and it comes with $20 credit. So I guess in a way it IS free :P

HSPA capable phone is a fancy word for a slightly modern phone that takes a SIM card. I wouldn't worry about it too much :)

Porting your number means you keep your own number which will be transferred from your current postpaid account to prepaid. The beauty is that if you move from Koodo postpaid to prepaid in that way, your plan will be cancelled immediately - all you need to do is pay your final bill up to that day + any remaining TAB.

Lastly, prepaid is awesome! I use it and will never change to a plan :D What made you decide to change your mind after you asked some questions about opening a second line?

Oh Emma, I just noticed you opened several topics today. Don't worry, we volunteers and also the Koodo employees read them ALL... but it might be easier for you to confine your questions to one thread.
The way you're asking questions now gets confusing easily, because you'll find different people answering the same thing in your various threads :)

You will need to buy a new SIM from a Koodo kiosk or store. The postpaid SIM cannot be used for a pre-paid account.

Sofia,
I wanted to switch to prepaid because I am not using any of my 200 minutes in my current $29/month plan! So I want to get the $15/month base plan for both my phone and my fathers phone and even perhaps my sisters cell phone. I am hoping they can do this and I can have another phone registered under my account.
I read that is says I do get a free SIM card as long as I have a HSPA compatible cell phone which I believe I do...
Thanks

You'll love prepaid, Emma, I'm on it too. In fact I only pay $13.50 because I use auto top-up (you need a credit card though).

I'm afraid you won't get a free SIM card, I'm not sure where you read that but you only get a free SIM card with a new phone. But you can try and who knows if you're charming enough they'll give it to you :D

Ah I see what you mean........

"Free with all NEW Prepaid Koodo HSPA compatible phones." (emph mine)

That means, only free when you buy a new prepaid phone from Koodo... sorry about that :(

Oh, I see now. So I guess I wouldn't qualify if I brought in a phone that I didn't directly buy from Koodo. I mean it is brand new and it works with Koodo because I took my SIM out and put it in my fathers new phone and it worked fine. That's too bad. :( SIM's are expensive!

Actually I was going back into my files of when I first started a plan w/ Koodo and realized that the SIM was free when I brought my phone into them. I didn't buy my phone from them I bought it in. And they didn't charge me for SIM card. So I am hoping this is the case with them now.

SIM cards are usually given for free on postpaid activations, phone or not. Prepaid isn't because like the name suggests, you have to pay beforehand to use the service.

Not trying to be rude here, but $20 isn't expensive for a SIM considering some places charge more and you still get a credit with it because you'd have to pay that anyway.

Ah I see. So I got the free SIM because I was going w/ a monthly plan.
And $20 is expensive considering the fact that Rogers charges $10 only. Haha :)

some people may find 20$ a bit much if their funds are a limited income between having food that week or a sim card and yes it is only one time but it is a chain effect when you have to plan ahead

@Gary Craig
Although there is a $20 charge for the SIM, once the user activates an account, they are provided a $20 credit on their purchase of a base plan and minutes or data booster, so effectively it balances to $0.
