A cdma device (phone with no sim slot) will only work with it's original carrier it was purchased from.

Unless you live in Saskatchewan, yes.

Also keep in mind the network for these is being shut down over the next year or two. Depending on where you live and what phone you have it could cease to get a signal as soon as March 31.

Are CDMA phones, usually the pay as you go, gas station phones?

Not sure what you mean by gas station phone. CDMA phones are pretty much the same as any other phone except that they only work on the cdma network and have no sim card slot. For example they make cdma versions of the iphone and etc.

My buddy bought a pay as you go phone, at a gas station, which did not have an external Sim card or Sim card slot.

CDMA has nothing more to do with prepaid than GSM. It's a different and increasingly obsolete network tech.
