I currently have a smartphone and a plan with Koodo, if I have bought an unlocked iPhone, can I activate it onto my account without changing my plan?

You just put your current sim card in the iphone ( if it's the same size sim card)

If it's a different size, you can activate sim card as "phone upgrade"
self serve > Mobile phone > swap mobile phone > Upgrade my current phone and follow the instructions

Yes you can. You just need to go into a Koodo store and purchase the appropriate sim card for the phone (micro sim card for iPhone 4 and 4S, nano sim card for iPhone 5/5C/5S). Once you purchase the sim card, log into self-serve and go to "Change phone" once there you will choose the option for a new sim card in phone and it will prompt you for the new sim cards #. Once done, hit submit, pop in the sim card into the iPhone and restart the phone. It could take up to 15 minutes for the network to complete the sim change but most of the time it's instantaneous.

If you already have the proper sim card, just place it into the iPhone and you're good to go.
didnt work for either of my new phones

Do you have 3g enabled on your new phones?
For android
settings->more settings
make sure flight mode/airplane mode does not have a green checkmark beside it
settings->more settings->mobile network
make sure network mode is set to GSM/HSPA/LTE auto mode
tap on network operators
search networks
select koodo.

For iphone, I forgot but it should be fairly easy to locate
