Can You Buy a Plan Without a Phone?

I was wondering, can I get a sim card/plan before I open my phone? I want to buy a new phone and the mall where I'm buying it from also has a Koodo kiosk so I want to just head there straight after to get a plan. However, I want to open this phone at home without the staff opening it before me. Is that possible to do? Do I need to set the phone up before or can I just get the sim from them with the plan then go home and install it myself?
Thanks,
Leo

Hi Leo,
Yes, you could. However, you need to talk to the agent. Otherwise, they would open it anyway. They want you (as a new customer) are all set, and don't have any troubles of using that phone on Koodo network.

Thank you, Azure
So as long as I tell them that I would just like the sim and to not open the box, I should be fine correct?

Thanks,
Leo

I would just tell the agent that you would like the phone sealed and unopened. So you could either open it yourself or give to someone else.

Unfortunately I don't think it's possible as they are obliged to open the phone and make it work in from of you. Last time I went, this is what they told me (1.5 years ago). It was for a X-mas gift.

Can't see why you couldn't get it sealed. When you buy one online they don't pre set it up for you.
If they refuse to at the store though you can always buy online as an alternative.

Last year, I got one phone sealed, and unopened. I waited for everything to finish and told them I knew what to do next.

It is preferred that the phone is set up in-store so reps can test everything to be 100% sure the phone works and to set up self-serve on the phone. Ultimately, it is a customers decision. But you have to communicate this to your rep in advance.

I’ve known people who got upset because the plastic that was covering the touchscreen was peeled off because they want to have the “peel experience” themselves.

So I emailed Koodo today and was able to get a reply. They told me that they can provide a plan and sim without touching the phone.

Leo I dont get why you couldnt get a simple Yes you can just buy a sim and a plan without an agent having to touch a brand new phone you didnt even buy from them.

To the 2 mobile masters and the 2 wannabe mobile masters. The OP asked the simplest of questions. He didnt even buy the phone from the Koodo kiosk. The kiosk didnt even need to know he had this phone to get a sim and a plan. Good job with your replies that confused him so much that he had to email Koodo to find an answer he could trust.

Azures answer. "Yes, you could"
Thats a simple yes. Then he gave additional information that would be useful to the OP.

Which is where he should have stopped. The additional info that you say was useful(along with the other replies) is why he ended up emailing Koodo.

We were all just having a discussion, its a forum, discussions happen.
Have a great evening!
