I thought I read somewhere that if I don't have Easy Roam I can't use the phone in US Where do I find pay per use rates?

You mentioned boosters and they are able to be used on any prepaid plan. Easy roam is not available on prepaid.

If you're on a postpaid plan then if you don't want to use easy-roam you will use pay per use rates.

If you receive a bill, then you are on monthly/postpaid.
If you top up your account every 30 day, then you are on prepaid.

If you are going to be away for more than 10 days or so and plan on making just a few calls per day, consider the following. It may work out cheaper than your current monthly rate with $7 a day piggybacked on.

You will have to do a calculation and figure if it's worth the effort for the amount of time you will be there and your usage:

Port your number to prepaid. Your current plan and account will be cancelled, and you will have to settle your tab,  but will receive a credit for the unused remainder of your monthly plan.

Buy the $15 a month baseplan and whatever boosters you think you will need for the month or for the amount of time you will need to run them down. There is no per diem on prepaid.
You can go back to a monthly account whenever it suits you, even before your 30 day baseplan is up. When you switch back, you will lose any balances in your account ($, minutes, data, remaining time on baseplan). Your choice of plan will be limited to byod deals available at the time.
