I have a S3 that is locked with Telus. If I were to pay the fee of unlocking it (35$) and get a plan with koodo would I have to pay for a new sim card as well? or do I have to buy a new one when I get the plan with koodo.

Yes you will need a new SIM with Koodo. But you can save money getting it unlocked as Koodo Sims work in Telus phones.

You'll need a Koodo SIM card. Before unlocking your Telus S3, I'd take it to a Koodo kiosk to try with one of their SIM cards as many Telus phones don't need unlocking to work on Koodo.

Like others have said, it probably won't need to be unlocked. However you may also want to look into upgrading the phone. It's hitting 4 years old and won't be updated any further. If it still functions fine then sure, keep it while it lasts, but just know there are far better devices available at reasonable prices these days.

Since it is a working phone, I'd recommend keeping an eye out for deals on a new phone and getting one sooner rather then later - and then keeping the S3 as a backup. I always have an old phone handy in case something happens to my current one.
