Can I just purchase an iPhone SE outright online at the Apple Store just to use WiFi for iMessage?

Or do I really need a plan with it. All my friends have iPhones but I'm not the biggest fan besides the use of iMessage. Because my friends always get duplicate messages or some messages take forever to be received by their iPhones with my regular Android SMS messaging. I'd like to possible get just a basic iPhone for iMessage specifically. Is that possible?

Koodo does not sell phones without a plan, Alexis. The iPhone is not even available on prepaid.

OOOPS oops oops I just now noticed you said APPLE STORE, duh! I must learn to read :) YES of course you can buy one there and use it on WiFi only, or you can get fancy and buy Koodo prepaid for your iPhone so you can text all your non-iPhone friends as well.

Sorry to give you the runaround!

If you are only interested in iMessage over wifi i would recommend getting an iPod Touch over an iPhone. It will save you a lot of money and the only difference is that there are no phone capabilities (which you dont want anyways).

IPhone SE 16GB - $579.99
IPod Touch 16GB - $249.99

I was reading that purchasing an iPod touch is a waste of money?

Yet I wouldn't just use it for iMessage, I'd also be able to download Spotify to it and use it in my car to play my music, I usually use my phone, but if I can save my battery life and Data on my phone and download the playlists on Spotify(it allows you to download playlists you like over WiFi to play without having to use Data)  at least i'd be using it for more than one thing. I purchased an iPad mini 2 not too long ago and returned it because I didn't like it. If I can get the same Apps and what not using the iPod touch, I'd rather pay 239$ for the iPod touch and use it as a mini tablet/music player/iMessage. Seems worth my money. Idk why some people said it was a waste of money.

If you dont plan on using it for data, texting or calling then the iPod Touch is the exact same, (os wise) as the iPhone SE. The only difference between an iPod Touch and an iPhone is the ability to put a sim card into it.
Spotify is available to download with an IPod and i believe the iPhone and iPod share the same app apps.
You can go into your local apple store, tell them what you want the device to do and they can confirm the best option for you.
