I'm planning on travelling to the US soon. If I have a pre-paid phone can I still get a U.S. roaming add-on (the 3-day unlimited texting one for $10 from here) or is that only for people with plans?

Sorry, but no. At this time koodo prepaid only works in Canada.

Take this opportunity being in the US to get an unlocked phone...much better selection across the board!  Then having an unlocked handset you can get a prepaid USA SIM card from many sources for very low prices when traveling.   Or you could unlock your current handset and get a USA SIM once in the US.

Ironically, AT&T's prepaid offering in the US works in Canada and Mexico!  If they can do it, I wonder what's the hold-up with Telus/Koodo...

The competition is different in USA, T-Mobile offering a service that does all 3 countries with no roaming charges whatsoever for a flat rate, provided you are based in the US and at least 50% of the usage occurs there. But certainly not prepaid.

Leave your Cdn cell phones at home or in the luggage, and buy a US prepaid Tracfone in any dollar store with 3 months service for not too much more than the price of unlocking a Cdn phone, and calling Canada works.

AT&T's GoPhone service has international roaming.

The best flexibility and familiarity (your handset, apps, data etc) will come with owning unlocked handsets from the get go - or they can be unlocked for low cost.

Prepaid voice/data or data only SIMs can be had almost everywhere south of the border (can also be ordered before leaving on trip) and when traveling in most foreign countries...with rates that are likely cheaper than what we pay here. ;)

With so many people nowadays using apps for chat/messaging/talk (whatsapp,Line, viber, Facebook, skype etc) simply having a WiFi connection or a prepaid data-only SIM fulfills most needs.
