Hi Brigid,

It's basically a one-phone per line at a time kinda thing. You would not be able to purchase 3 phones at the same itme with only 1 line.

my boyfriend and I were looking to get new phones. He wants one for himself, and he was going to get me one for my birthday.

For a whole bunch of reasons, I'd suggest getting your own phone & account even if your boyfriend chooses to make a gift of the phone for you.

However, it is possible to put more than one phone on an account, and pay with one bill. Minutes between the phones on an account are free, but that's all the 'family' sharing there is.

Just be aware that only one of you can be the legal account owner and as such will have final say over what happens with the line(s), whether you share the expense or not.

It's not a family plan. Calls and texts between lines on the same account are free but that's it. You don't share minutes or data.
