I want to buy an AT&T GoPhone from America and then permanently transfer carriers to Koodo so that I can use it in Canada. Is this possible, and if so, what is the procedure?

I saw a good deal for an AT&T Nokia Lumia on Amazon.com, but after investigating I've now decided it'd probably just be easier and about the same price to buy the same brand, and unlocked, from Amazon.ca. Cheaper shipping and would probably end up paying the same after unlocking it from AT&T. Anyways, thanks for the answers!

For anyone else who has the same question...

Yes.

Research the phone you want to buy online to be sure unlock codes are available for ir.

Buy the phone, AT&T will not unlock a gophone unless you've been a customer for at least 90 days. Your only option for unlocking is eBay or one of the many other third party unlocking websites such as cellunlocker.net

Follow the directions given to unlock your phone (usually insert your other carrier sim and enter a code)

Insert your Koodo sim

You may need to program your apn settings. Check out this guide by Ivan.

In my experience, some AT&T phones can be notoriously difficult to unlock. I suggest thoroughly researching the availability of 3rd party unlock codes before you make the purchase.

I am using an unlocked Note 4 AT&T phone with a Koodo sim and there is no problem. That said, am I able to get Android 6.0.1 on it? How do I update my software?

You sadly generally require an AT&T Sim card to get updates. That's why I stay away from them.
