Can I buy a phone outright without a contract?

I'm currently with Koodo. I brought my phone over and go month-to-month. I'm interesting in purchasing a new phone but don't want a contract. When I click the Retail Price option, it has a bullet that reads "Plans start from $30/month" so I'm unsure if that's optional or not.

Hi John
I don't see Koodo selling phone outright as of now.
If you want to buy a phone outright without any phone plan, it might be better to buy them from manufacturers or phone retailers ( bestbuy, apple, google, samsung..).

You can get a phone with a plan, then cancel the plan and pay off the tab. But it might indeed be easier to just buy the phone outright!

@Sophia well I already have a $49/mo plan, but I'm not on a contract. I'm also unsure whether I'm going to keep the new phone or not so I'm wondering what will happen if I do the return within 15 days (and how that affects any plan I was required to sign up for to buy it)

You can return the phone. However you will be stuck with the plan you went with to be eligible for the tab level. You can change your plan the next billing cycle (30-days) to a different in market plan offered at that time or at any time after that.
Also Koodo doesnt have contracts they have tabs that you pay off in 24 equal monthly payments but you can pay off that tab at any time with no extra fees added.

> 24 equal payments

What's the difference between a tab and a contract then?

Tab is to pay off the loan Koodo offers on phone purchases. It is separate from the cellular plan pricing, in that once repayment is complete, your bill drops by the amount of the monthly Tab instalment.

You do have an obligation to pay the loan, but can buy it out with no penalty, and cancel your service at any time. In the past, there were penalties for ending your service plan early.

With a contract you are committing to x years of service with a company so to leave you'll have to pay the monthly charges for the phone + the monthly plan costs for the time remaining in the contract.
With Koodo you only have to pay for the phone and the days you've used in your plan if you choose to leave.

Hi John,

Yes you can purchase any phone with No Tab. There are also other options such as buying directly from the manufacturer.

The $49 plan you have looks to be from Quebec.
This plan can use used with a Tab or without a Tab.
So you can return your phone within the 15 day return period and not have it impact your monthly phone plan.

You can also buy another phone outright, without a tab (iphone might be the exception, but you can get that direct from Apple online))/
