If I buy a phone locked to public mobile can I get a plan on Koodo without having to unlock it? Someone said Telus, Koodo and public mobile are all the same so I'm hoping it won't be a problem

Paul, though I've never tried, David Bernard tried it and he says a Koodo phone will work with Public. Therefore, it should work the other way around!

Although sometimes it does, it is safer and more reliable to believe that it does not. We cannot say that your phone WILL work since we are sister companies, but you are right they MAY work.

It all has to do with the system code (MNC). Telus and Koodo both use code 220. This is why they work without unlocking. The codes are set when the networks are initially built Fido and Rogers have different MNC codes and this is why they are seen as different networks to the SIM.

That said, Public Mobile is now also using MNC 220. If all holds true, and I have not tested it, they should all (Koodo, Public, Telus) be interchangeable without unlocking.

Older Public Mobile phones worked on a completely different spectrum.

Previous customers had to upgrade phones, so all bets are off.

My sister in law had to dump her favourite phone from P.M.. I gave her my previous Koodo LG slider, unlocked, and all is good on Public for her.

I wouldn't dream of going in the other direction. The Public Mobile phones are non-data and no-roaming anyway, so even the cheapest Koodo phone is a better deal in the long run.
