Call forwarding add-on for an unlimited plan

There is a $3/month add-on for call forwarding. However, I tried activating forwarding to a Canadian number through the call settings menu item on my phone and it worked. What's the purpose of the add-on? I am on an unlimited Canada-wide plan ported from Public Mobile. Just can't figure out why would I pay $3 per month if it works for free. Thoughts?

When using call forwarding you are charged 0.50 cents a minute. The $3 add-on lets you use it without the extra charges.

Got it. Thanks folks. But somehow it was not obvious from the plan description. Is the 0.5 fee mentioned somewhere on the website?

Somewhere or other in a nitty gritty. But it adds up much faster than you can find it. The $3 monthly is a bargain.

Is it 0.5 cents or 50 ($0.5) cents per minute?

I see how it would add up. Thanks!
