Buying a Blackberry, is Data Plan/ BBM required?

I was looking into purchasing a new phone and saw the great price of the Blackberry Curve 9320. However I just wanted to question if it would be worth a purchase.

I like the sound of the battery life and interface. But I currently only have a non-data plan, the "Canada-Wide Talk + Text 25 Dbl". I have no need for facebook or email on the phone, just some reliable hardware for the basics.

So if I continue my plan will I be able to purchase and use the phone? And also if I do buy the Curve, is it mandatory that I pay an additional $5 a month for BBM with any blackberry phone? I have no need for the service, or want to pay an extra $5 a month on top of my bill.

Sorry for a long question, but just wanted to know all the ins and outs, before jumping on a purchase.

Thanks!

No data plan is required to use a blackberry with koodo. Just be aware that no data means no picture messaging either.

Thanks for the quick reply Timo! Are you certain about photo msging? I have no data on my current phone ( An old Samsung Evergreen) and msg photos to contacts quite often and have never been billed for it. My current plan includes "Unlimited SMS and MMS" so I believe it also said in it's description all multimedia messages are free.

Unfortunately with smartphones data HAS to be enabled to send or receive MMS messages... it is included of course however it is too easy to rake up data costs with any app that reaches out to the Internet. The same applies to your other (Lumia) phone you have in mind... for that too data is required in order to send pictures messages.

Sophia is correct that Picture messaging only works if you have Data enabled on the phone, however Blackberrys with koodo work slightly differently as, at least with your choice of the Curve 9320, a connection with BIS (Blackberry internet server, hosted by Blackberry (the company) is needed).

In order to use picture messaging on a Blackberry such as the one you mentioned, not only does data have to be enabled, but you must also either have a Blackberry add on, or data, included in your plan or as an add on.

Thank you Sophia and Josh, you are both very helpful and probably saved me a dozen dollars by avoiding such a mistake! Is BBM mandatory for every Blackberry phone, though? Do I HAVE to pay for that service?

Your welcome! Glad I could help :).

To answer your question, no, BBM is not mandatory for every Blackberry phone meaning you do not have to pay anything above the $25 + tax (and other fees) plan you mentioned earlier.

However, without the BBM add-on and without data being included in your plan, one of the downsides to having the Blackberry Curve 9320 is that you won't be able to send picture messages.

Every single Blackberry that is not a Blackberry 10, requires a specific Blackberry connection in order to access data services.

Without BBM, you won't be granted that access which means that you cannot access data or the internet without WiFi available. Therefore, since picture messaging requires a data connection open (you won't be charged though), you won't be able to send a picture message because you do not have the specific Blackberry data connection open.

I've been thinking of changing my plan to one of the Canada Wide Data Plans, do I have to add BBM as an add-on.
