BlackBerry Q5 won't turn on.

I have a Koodo BlackBerry Q5. Whenever I switch it off, it won't power back up. It loads the 'blackberry' screen and then it fades to black and the phone is a paperweight.

It requires a firmware re-install from blackberry link to actually work again, then I have to re-install my backup.

Am I unique with this problem? Is it a firmware issue or an actual hardware fault? I'm loath to return it and get it sent off, but if I have to I have to...

Next time you restore the backup do a partial restore. Apps and data, media bit not settings.

That's a thought, perhaps I am restoring whatever corruption / setting that's tripping the handset up? I will try this next time the problem occurs. I will also try totally wiping the handset and seeing if I can make the problem occur.

I have the real feeling it's not a hardware problem but something in firmware / config. which makes me think that sending it for a repair probably won't help.

OK, tried that. No better. :( Today the phone died when I tried to use the camera. I'm thinking there's a battery problem or a bad connection internally.

I'll be returning the phone today and the very nice person (Rob) at Koodo Moncton has promised to swap it with another brand new one in 10 minutes at the most.

Good customer service from Koodo, as usual! :)

Sounds like a possible bad battery. Since the battery is non-removable, it's best to send it in for repair. If the phone gets excessively hot while charging, or you notice swelling at the battery compartment, stop charging the phone. There are a few other options to try that will factory reset the phone in the event the issue is caused by a glitch in the phones' operating system. I've provided some links below to get you started.

Side note: If all else fails and given the age of this phone, have you thought about upgrading to perhaps a newer Blackberry? (Blackberry is no longer sold through Koodo and would have to be purchased through Blackberry direct or at some Staples locations. One advantage to purchasing direct or through a retailer is that the phone is shipped unlocked).
